We consume 25% of the worlds oil. We have 3% of the worlds oil reserves. Drilling will solve NOTHING. We will be dependant on middle eastern oil if we do not completely change.

If we were to drill now, we’d still have ten years before we were able to take over our own energy problems, because we don’t have the refineries and internal structure to make the oil we get from the ground usable. And then we’d wreck our own natural resources trying to keep supporting ourselves, pollute our own shores, and destroy our own forests and caribou, so we’d actually be worse off in twenty years. And then, since there’s not an infinite amount of oil in there, we’d be out about ten years after that.
Maybe you’ve heard “when you’re in a hole, stop digging.” Well, when you are in a hole, stop drilling.
(Also, how can anyone be anti-exploration? We know where it is: there’s not enough there.)
Liberals are emotional and passionate; they tend to think with their hearts rather than their heads. Sometimes that is a good thing; often it is not. Their idea now for example – that a windfall profits tax on Oil Companies would be a nice punitive measure against successful businesses is again wrong-headed and ignorant. Any such tax would only be passed back to the consumer in the form of higher prices. But liberal passion for the uninsured, and access to health care – on the other hand – could lead to much needed reform.
The liberal sword cuts both ways.

We don’t. It’s a waste of time, and doesn’t help. WE’RE RUNNING OUT OF OIL WITHIN 100 YEARS!!
It’s like in the late 1800s and everything was run with whale oil. Many didn’t want to try to find a substitute until all whales were extinct. Even once the substitute was found (fatefully petroleum), there was a huge resistance until government forced everything to change.
That’s government’s responsibility now. Provide incentives to find other fuel methods, create infrastructure for that change, and write laws that force that change, if necessary.
I consider myself a political liberal and I believe that “produce more” is only a short term solution to a long term problem, however, I’m also realistic, and I’m aware that that developing, producing and marketing a viable alternative is still many years away and a short term solution is needed now. We should continue with current drilling and production of fossil fuels, but, we need to start serious research and development of alternatives before we find ourselves out of oil with no “Plan B”.
Actually, it’s not just a hatred of oil companies, it’s a hatred of business. They automatically assume that every business is evil and greedy, which obviously includes oil companies. They cannot see that, when businesses do better, then our economy does better and many of us do better as well. It is all tied together.
BTW, I’m a school teacher, so my salary is paid solely by taxes, and I don’t own any stocks. I’m not in business but I don’t **** business.

The technology is not there yet. If you think it is…do you realize how many products everyone uses that is made from petroleum??? Do you know how many BILLIONS of vehicles in the world use gas and oil? How many BILLIONS of homes use oil and gas for heating an cooking? Do you know how many MILLIONS of people are employed by the oil and gas industry worldwide? This can’t be shut down overnight. It MUST be a gradual thing.
We need to do BOTH. More drilling now…and continue to explore alternative energy sources for the future.
I suggest you research on this topic, because this is a BIG one. Search the net for PEAK OIL.
Further expansion of the oil industry will hardly do ANYTHING to solve the problem. By doing that, you are actually becoming MORE addicted to oil, while alternative fuel will FAIL to become available, because… why would you want to invest in them when oil pays off better ?
The solution is actually REDUCING the dependence on oil. Invest in alternative technologies, pass energy efficiency policies… this is what should be done.

Oh they can expand all they want but they’re not using my taxes or MY American resources to do it. If you don’t believe in handing out welfare to a mother of three working two jobs I don’t know how your brain can allow you to favor passing it out to a trillion dollar oil company.
If a company can’t stand on it’s own legs without government money then it needs to fail, that is called capitalism.
No one can “explain” liberals… but to give you an Idea.. Obama is for increasing the Capitol Gains Tax, even though he admits that doing so would *reduce* revenues to the Treasury.. He would do it because it’s “fair” (what ever that means).. same thing with the oil companies.. they have a product that everyone wants and needs…. *BUT* they actually make a profit (less, percentage wise, than many other businesses) selling this product… The price has gone up through circumstances beyond their control and *some* people feel that we should kill the goose to reduce prices (by further taxing their profits, *and* not permitting them to explore for new oil and thus reduce prices).. but it would be “fair”
A Day in the Life of Joe Republican
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too.
He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.
If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.
He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans.
The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”
